The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) announced on Thursday, 13 August 2026, that Pakistan’s first lunar rover will be named “Jinnah-1”.
Suparco said the name was chosen from about 4,000 proposals submitted in a countrywide competition. The mission
According to Suparco, Jinnah-1 is scheduled to be sent to the Moon in 2029 as part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission. It will operate in the Moon’s south polar region, described by the agency as challenging terrain with potential for significant scientific discovery.
The rover is to conduct scientific research at the lunar south pole, including studies of plasma, radiation and the Moon’s surface geology, as well as experiments relevant to future lunar research and the prospect of a human presence on the Moon. Suparco said it announced its collaboration with China’s Chang’e-8 mission in 2024, calling the inclusion of an indigenous Pakistani rover a milestone for the national space programme.
