What happened
At least 10 people were killed and six others injured when a three-storey building collapsed in Lahore’s Baghbanpura area late on Wednesday night, according to Lahore Rescue 1122, as monsoon rains continued to batter Punjab.
Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmad said emergency crews pulled 16 people from the rubble of the building in the Kotli Pir Abdul Rehman area. Six were pronounced dead at the scene and four more died of their injuries at hospital, raising the death toll to 10, he said. Four critically injured people were being treated at Lahore Services Hospital, while two others had been discharged.
Police said the roof of the dilapidated residence caved in at about 10:15 pm, causing the entire building to collapse.
The victims
Members of a multigenerational family living on different floors of the building were trapped when it came down. The deceased were identified as Shahida Bibi, 45; Samina Bibi, 45; Mujahid, 22; Ahad Ali, 22; Ayesha Bibi, 18; Hasnain, 10; Neelam, 10; Hamid, 7; Komal; and Naseem Bibi, 72.
Response and context
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif expressed grief over the loss of life, and on her instructions the city commissioner visited the hospital and the incident site to meet survivors. PML-N MPA Malik Waheed also visited the site and assured relatives that assistance would be provided.
The collapse came weeks after at least 14 children were killed on 30 June when the roof of a private tuition centre in Lahore’s Kahna area gave way. After that tragedy, the chief minister ordered an immediate safety audit of school buildings in densely populated areas across the province.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority, at least half of the more than 100 monsoon-related deaths in Pakistan this season were caused by house and roof collapses.
