What happened
At least 14 people, including police officials, were killed and 22 others wounded on Sunday when a suicide bomber detonated explosives outside Kabal police station in Pakistan’s Swat district, police said.
Swat police spokesperson Nasir Iqbal Karimi confirmed the death toll to Dawn. Malakand Division Deputy Inspector General of Police Fida Hussain told AFP that police officers were among the dead, that 22 people had been wounded and that another body, suspected to be that of the bomber, had been brought to hospital.
According to Swat District Police Officer Umar Khan, the bomber set off his explosives after police personnel tried to stop and search him at the entrance to the station. Khan said police had been on high alert and that security forces had cordoned off the area and begun collecting evidence.
The explosion occurred near the gate of the police station while hundreds of people were taking part in a public demonstration at nearby Kabal Chowk against the recent wave of militancy in the Swat Valley. The attack came as the final speaker was addressing the crowd, triggering panic among participants. The wounded were shifted to Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital for treatment.
No group had claimed responsibility for the bombing by Sunday.
Why it matters
The attack struck a district that was the centre of a Taliban insurgency between 2007 and 2009, when the Pakistani military drove the militants out and re-established state control. Police have been repeatedly targeted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recent months, and the bombing hit a gathering that had assembled to demand that the state restore security.
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow over the loss of life and called for a comprehensive investigation, according to a statement issued by his office. He directed the authorities to provide the best possible medical facilities to the injured. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned the blast, and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi sought a report from the provincial inspector general of police and offered condolences to the families of the dead.

Police had not established who carried out the bombing, and it was not immediately clear whether the police station or the nearby protest was the intended target. The casualty figures were those given by police on Sunday and could change as hospitals updated their counts.
