What happened
Militants attacked a joint police check post in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district overnight, killing 15 people and wounding several others, the military’s media wing said on Friday, 24 July 2026.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the assault took place during the night between 23 and 24 July at the Manji Khel check post on the Tank–Dera Ismail Khan road. It said the attackers, identified in the statement as the “Indian-sponsored Fitna al-Khwarij” — a term security officials use for the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan — tried to breach the post’s security but were repelled by troops.
According to Dawn, the security personnel engaged the fleeing militants and killed 12 of them. In a final attempt, the attackers rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the perimeter wall, and the blast severely damaged the facility.
The ISPR said 15 people were martyred: 12 military personnel, two policemen and one government official from the Forest Department. It said a sanitisation operation was under way to track down any remaining militants, vowing that the counter-terrorism campaign under the Azm-i-Istehkam framework would continue.
The Express Tribune reported that Tank Deputy Commissioner Jamshed Khan imposed Section 144 across the district and announced a district-wide curfew, restricting movement from 6am to 6pm until further notice. Several roads, including the Dabara-to-Tank bypass and the Tank bypass–Ranwal–Manji Khel–Bhagwal road, were to remain closed during those hours, with emergency services exempted.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi took notice of the attack and sought a report, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned it and paid tribute to the dead. “We will not rest until terrorism is eliminated from the soil of Pakistan,” the prime minister said, according to ARY News.
Why it matters
The attack was one of the deadliest strikes on a security installation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in weeks and underlined the continued intensity of militancy in the province bordering Afghanistan. Dawn noted that security forces had killed 24 militants in Bannu district the previous week, and that at least 15 police personnel were martyred in a suicide attack on the Fateh Khel police post in Bannu in May.
The targeting of a joint police and military position also reflected the pressure on personnel manning static checkpoints across the province, where the Centre for Research and Security Studies reported that conflict fatalities rose from 1,620 in 2024 to 2,331 in 2025.
