Militants killed at least three police officers and wounded dozens more in two separate attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, Nukta reported.
The deadliest attack struck Lower Dir district, where police teams conducting a search-and-strike operation near Khal Police Station came under heavy fire from militants in the Rabat area. The firefight lasted several hours before police recovered the bodies and moved the wounded to the District Headquarters Hospital in Timergara.
In a separate, still-developing incident, militants attempted to ram an explosives-laden vehicle into the Miryan police station in Bannu district, triggering a powerful explosion. Noman Khitab, a spokesman for Khalifa Gul Nawaz Teaching Hospital, said six injured people, including two police officers and four civilians, were brought in as staff were placed on high alert.
Police said the blast was heard from a considerable distance and damaged both the police station and nearby homes. A heavy exchange of fire continued after the explosion, causing panic among residents. District Police Officer Muhammad Furqan Bilal confirmed the attack, saying additional forces and the police Peace Committee had reached the site to conduct a clearance operation. The situation remained fluid, with officials saying the operation was ongoing.
Claims and casualty figures
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the Lower Dir attack, while Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan said it carried out the Bannu attack and released what it described as details of the alleged suicide bomber, according to Nukta.
Accounts of the toll varied during the day. The Associated Press reported that the twin attacks killed at least three police officers and wounded 20, with the first attack in Upper Dir and the later car bombing in Bannu; Pakistani outlets, including Nukta, placed the deadly ambush in Lower Dir near Khal Police Station. Nukta reported three officers killed and 18 injured in Lower Dir, and six people wounded in Bannu.

The attacks underscore a renewed surge in militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the province bordering Afghanistan, where police and security posts have been repeatedly targeted.
