PSX surges 14,000 points to all-time high after US-Iran ceasefire lifts Gulf markets

The KSE-100 closed 14,137.55 points higher at 165,811 on 8 April 2026, its biggest single-day gain ever, after the Pakistan-brokered US-Iran ceasefire.

What happened

The Pakistan Stock Exchange’s benchmark KSE-100 index jumped 14,137.55 points, or 9.32 per cent, to close at 165,811.00 on Wednesday, 8 April 2026 — the largest single-day rally in PSX history — after investors reacted to the Pakistan-brokered two-week US–Iran ceasefire announced hours earlier. The benchmark opened sharply higher at 164,035.83 (up 12,362.38 points, or 8.15pc), triggering a brief trading suspension under PSX regulations, before extending gains to 165,598.92 by mid-afternoon.

The previous all-time single-day gain was 10,123 points (9.45pc) on 12 May 2025, after Pakistan shot down seven Indian fighter planes. On Tuesday, 7 April, the PSX had closed up just 465.64 points amid extreme volatility ahead of Trump’s deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Why it matters

The rally is the mirror image of the steepest single-day plunge in PSX history — a 16,089-point (9.57pc) bloodbath on 2 March 2026, the day after the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In five weeks the index had given back months of gains, with oil, gas and energy stocks caught in the Tehran–Washington tariff war that closed the Strait of Hormuz to most traffic.

Brent crude slid 13pc to $94.71 per barrel and US crude dropped about 15pc to $96.31, while S&P 500 futures rose 2.5pc and European futures jumped more than 5pc. Asia’s Nikkei climbed about 5pc and South Korea’s KOSPI vaulted 6pc. US 10-year Treasury yields fell 10 basis points to 4.241pc; gold climbed 2.5pc to $4,820 per ounce.

Pakistan’s mediation effort was visible in the rally. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif told the National Assembly that the dividend of the Field Marshal Asim Munir-led backchannel was “in front of us”, a day after the Pakistan-mediated framework was confirmed. Opposition leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai extended “unconditional support” and PTI called off its Thursday protest.

What is still uncertain

Analysts cautioned that the rally was event-driven and that durability depends on the follow-up track. A breakdown of the 10 April Islamabad talks would expose the PSX to the same volatility that drove the March sell-off. A sustained ceasefire would do the opposite: restore foreign-portfolio flows, ease the import-bill pressure weighing on the rupee, and reduce the diesel-stock and foreign-reserves pressures that prompted the federal cabinet’s 4 April petroleum-levy cut to Rs80 per litre.

The 9.32pc gain is also a single-day print. Whether the level holds through the next IMF review, the next Ogra pricing reset, and the next round of inflation data is the question brokers are asking.
