Reporting snapshot · 19 October 2026 (Asia/Karachi). Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated Daanish School Kuri in Islamabad on 18 October 2026 and used the ceremony to set out the federal government's current count for the Daanish Schools network: more than 40,000 enrolled students and 28 schools under construction, with a planned first Daanish University of Science and Technology in Islamabad nearing completion. The article rests on the APP wire, Radio Pakistan, Geo News and Pakistan Today's 18 October reports, and The Express Tribune's separate account of the same event.
What the prime minister said
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on 18 October used the inauguration of Daanish School Kuri to argue that Pakistan cannot “reach its true destination” without equal access to quality education, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported (APP wire, 18 October). Pakistan Today and Geo News carried the same opening paragraph (Pakistan Today, 18 October; Geo News, 18 October). The Express Tribune’s separate account adds a line about preparing students “for the demands of the modern world by promoting information technology, robotics, artificial intelligence”, which the wire and Pakistan Today record only as a passing reference (The Express Tribune, 18 October).
PM Shehbaz used a single comparison: affluent families can send their children to “the best schools in Pakistan” and abroad, while children from poor families “could never dream of attending elite institutions like Aitchison College”, APP reported. Aitchison College, founded in Lahore in 1886, is one of Pakistan’s most expensive fee-charging schools; the PM’s use here is rhetorical.
The briefing-room figures
The most concrete new information came from the school-by-school breakdown read out at the ceremony, APP reported; Pakistan Today reports the same breakdown. More than 40,000 students are currently receiving education at Daanish Schools, and 28 schools are under construction across the country: nine in Balochistan, six in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, three in Sindh, five in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and four in Gilgit-Baltistan. The government is also completing the first Daanish University of Science and Technology in Islamabad. Radio Pakistan’s release covered the inauguration headline without the breakdown (Radio Pakistan, 18 October).
The 28-school breakdown totals 27 schools, not 28; APP and Pakistan Today match, and neither explains the apparent one-school gap, which appears to be a reporting or transcription ambiguity. The briefing did not publish a budget figure for the 28-school expansion, a single national figure for Daanish Schools graduates in the workforce, or a breakdown of male and female students across the 40,000.
The Pakistan Endowment Fund reform
The second policy item is the re-designation of the Punjab Education Endowment Fund as the Pakistan Education Endowment Fund. The PM said the renamed fund was “now a realisation of Quaid-e-Azam’s vision that all children from the length and breadth of country should get equal opportunities in education and health”, The Express Tribune reported; APP, Geo News and Pakistan Today carried the same formulation. The federal scheme already existed alongside the Punjab one, as KhabarWire has tracked; Sunday’s announcement is a re-presentation of an existing arrangement, and the speeches did not publish the Fund’s current endowment, annual disbursement, or scholarship count.
How the outlets frame the story
The four accounts frame the same event differently. APP and Pakistan Today lead with equal opportunity and the school breakdown, with no prominent mention of AI or robotics. Geo News adds a “so it’s not Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s Pakistan” line near the top (Geo News, 18 October). The Express Tribune uniquely leads on information technology, robotics and artificial intelligence, but the wire and Pakistan Today do not give that line the same prominence. Radio Pakistan’s release emphasises the network as a vehicle for talented children from disadvantaged backgrounds (Radio Pakistan, 18 October).
The two student stories the PM cited
PM Shehbaz singled out two students from the Daanish Schools system by name. Zahid Gul from Kurram in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Aiman Ali Gul, both spoke after the prime minister, thanking the system for enabling their studies despite financial hardship, APP reported; Pakistan Today adds that five Daanish School graduates (Amanat Ali, Ansa, Irfan Ullah, Dr Aleena and Naeem Asghar) also shared their post-graduation experiences (Pakistan Today, 18 October). Federal Education Minister Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan also spoke; both accounts name them as the supporting speakers.
How the Kuri inauguration fits the storyline
The 18 October Kuri inauguration is the latest datapoint in a longer Daanish Schools storyline. PM Shehbaz established the network in 2010 as chief minister of Punjab. The federal government extended it to other provinces during his subsequent federal tenure, with a major 8 January 2026 expansion announcement in Quetta noting five new schools in Balochistan. The 26 January 2026 Daanish Schools Authority Bill, signed by President Asif Ali Zardari as part of the seven-bills package that day, is the legal frame within which the current network operates.
The most recent Daanish-branded federal event before Sunday was the 10 October 2026 inauguration of the National Technology Park renamed Daanish IT Park, covered by KhabarWire on 10 October, a separate institution. The names share “Daanish” but the institutions are separate — the Kuri campus is part of the schools network, the IT Park is a separate national technology park.
Sunday’s inauguration is the prime minister’s first public appearance at an education-sector ceremony since the K-P emergency rule proclamation on 11 October, as KhabarWire reported.
What is still uncertain
Three open questions remain on the record. First, whether the 28-school expansion timeline has a federal completion date and whether each new school will follow the same curriculum, staffing and fee model as the original Daanish Schools. Second, when the first Daanish University of Science and Technology in Islamabad will open and what its first intake will be; the Daanish Authority Board meeting on 29 July directed “timely completion” without publishing a date. Third, the briefing figure of 40,000 students is the first on-record national enrolment count; whether it includes students at all original campuses, all sites currently in the network, or only students on the federal register is not in the published material.
