What happened
Pakistan’s maritime security agency rescued seven crew members from an Indian vessel after it suffered a technical failure in the Arabian Sea, the Pakistan Navy said on Tuesday.
The navy said its Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) ship Kashmir responded to a distress signal from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mumbai after the vessel, the multipurpose offshore ship MV Gautam, suffered what it described as a critical technical failure while travelling to India from Oman.
The seven rescued crew comprised six Indians and one Indonesian, according to the navy’s statement. It said the ship provided food, medical aid and other supplies, along with technical assistance to restore essential systems.
“Leveraging its robust maritime surveillance and response capability, Pakistan Navy ensured rapid deployment of PMSA Ship KASHMIR,” the navy said. It added that the operation underscored its commitment to the “safety of life at sea” and to humanitarian and maritime responsibilities irrespective of nationality.
Why it matters
The Arabian Sea forms part of one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors, linking Gulf energy supplies with global markets, and sees heavy commercial traffic pass close to Pakistan’s coastline. A breakdown on a commercial vessel in those waters can quickly become a safety and environmental risk.
The rescue also came as Pakistan and India marked one year since the nuclear-armed neighbours fought a brief four-day conflict in May 2025 involving drones, missiles and fighter jets. The maritime interaction was a rare instance of cooperation announced while tensions between the two countries remain unresolved.
What is still uncertain
The navy did not say what caused the technical failure on the MV Gautam or how long the recovery operation took. It also did not state where the rescued crew were taken or whether the vessel itself was towed to port. The Indian authorities had not publicly commented on the Pakistani account. The rescue came days after the Pakistan Navy commissioned its first Hangor-class submarine, part of a broader naval modernisation push.
