What was announced
The Pakistan Navy launched Operation Muhafizul Bahr on Monday 9 March 2026 to counter “multidimensional threats to national shipping and maritime trade”, the military’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.
According to the ISPR statement, reported by The News, the decision followed the “evolving regional maritime security environment and potential disruptions to critical sea lanes”. The operation is intended to ensure the uninterrupted flow of national energy supplies and the security of sea lines of communication, with Pakistan Navy escort operations conducted in close coordination with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC). The Navy said it was actively monitoring and controlling the movement of merchant vessels to ensure their safe and secure transit, and that it remained prepared to respond to emerging maritime security challenges.
The same report said Pakistan Navy ships were at the time escorting two merchant vessels, one of which was scheduled to arrive in Karachi on Monday. With roughly 90% of Pakistan’s trade carried by sea, the operation is meant to keep those routes “safe, secure and uninterrupted”.
Why it matters
The launch places the Pakistan Navy directly in the security fallout from the war in the Middle East. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint through which most of Pakistan’s Gulf oil and gas imports pass, has been disrupted by Iranian retaliation against US bases and the wider conflict, and Islamabad has been forced to secure alternative crude cargoes and shipping routes. It also did not say whether the operation would extend beyond Pakistan’s immediate approaches into the Gulf or the Red Sea, or whether it involves coordination with foreign navies.
