Pakistan marks 79th Independence Day with ceremonies

What happened

Pakistan observed its 79th Independence Day on Friday, 14 August 2026, with gun salutes, flag-hoisting ceremonies and public celebrations across the country.

Radio Pakistan reported that the day began with a 31-gun salute in the federal capital, Islamabad, and 21-gun salutes at the provincial headquarters. Special prayers were offered at mosques for the country’s peace, solidarity and prosperity, and a change of guards ceremony was held at the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi.

Flag-hoisting ceremonies were held at federal, provincial, divisional and district headquarters, and at the Supreme Court and the Federal Constitutional Court in Islamabad. In Lahore, ceremonies were held at the Governor House and crowds gathered at Greater Iqbal Park, Liberty Chowk and Mall Road, while photographs from Karachi showed visitors at Mazar-e-Quaid and Frere Hall. In Islamabad, civic authorities organised a public programme at the Old Parade Ground at D-Chowk for the evening, with musical performances and a fireworks display.

Leadership messages

President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and to the leaders and workers of the Pakistan Movement. He described the country’s youth as its greatest strength and called for strengthening the economy, creating opportunities for young people, improving education and skills, and carrying out governance, economic and social reforms so that the benefits of development reach every part of the country, according to Dawn.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the nation owed the achievement of an independent homeland to the vision and sacrifices of its founding leaders. He said the government had achieved economic stability over the previous two and a half years despite difficult circumstances and was moving towards a developed economy, highlighting an increase of 11.3 billion US dollars in remittances from overseas Pakistanis over two years. He listed information technology, innovation-driven industrial and agricultural development, employment and education among the government’s priorities.

The prime minister paid tribute to the armed forces over the May 2025 conflict, which the state calls Marka-e-Haq, and said Pakistan remained committed to defending its national interests, including its right to water resources. He expressed solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the Palestinians, and urged political parties and all sections of society to work together for national unity.

Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu said Pakistan’s strength lay in the unity and collective resolve of its people, and called for national cohesion and tolerance.

In a televised address, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar recalled the first anniversary of Marka-i-Haq and said the events of 2025 had underscored the need for a peaceful resolution of disputes, particularly Kashmir. He also referred to the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. In Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir President Chaudhry Latif Akbar addressed a flag-hoisting ceremony and said the people of AJK stood with Pakistan.
