What happened
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said on 5 September that the province had invested billions of rupees in technology and security, describing Punjab as Pakistan’s most AI-enabled province, Dawn reported.
Speaking at an AI technology event in Lahore, she said cameras at checkpoints had been made bulletproof and that thermal cameras and drones had been deployed. She argued that these measures had reduced loss of life in attacks, though she acknowledged attacks still occurred.
Maryam also said Punjab faced threats across its provincial borders and asserted that terrorism entered from neighbouring provinces. She identified organised crime and religious intolerance among the province’s challenges and said state control had improved in the riverine katcha areas through cooperation with the military and Sindh government.
PTI condemned her comparison between threats from other provinces and neighbouring countries, calling it a divisive way to frame a national security challenge.
Why it matters
The speech linked Punjab’s technology spending to a broader counter-terrorism narrative. Fortified cameras, thermal imaging and drones can improve surveillance at exposed checkpoints, but the government did not publish procurement costs, coverage figures or independent measures of effectiveness. Earlier in the year, Punjab’s home department said it would set up anti-drone units in every district after it had banned outdoor drone flying for 30 days.
The provincial-border language also turned a technology announcement into a federal political dispute. Counter-terrorism requires intelligence and policing cooperation across jurisdictions, making relations between provincial governments operationally important as well as politically sensitive.
