What happened
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif landed in Doha late on Monday 23 February 2026 for a two-day official visit to Qatar at the invitation of the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, state-run PTV News reported. The Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Muhammad bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, received the prime minister alongside Pakistan’s Ambassador to Qatar, Muhammad Aamer, and other diplomatic staff at Hamad International Airport.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office, in a curtain-raiser press release dated 23 February 2026, said the prime minister would be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and senior aide Tariq Fatemi, “other Ministers and senior officials”. The visit runs from 23 to 24 February 2026.
Why it matters
Qatar is one of Pakistan’s most consistent sources of liquefied natural gas, and Doha has hosted successive rounds of trilateral dialogue between Pakistan, Afghanistan and Qatar in recent years. The Foreign Office statement said the two sides would explore “new avenues of cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, energy, infrastructure development, and manpower export”, and that both leaders would “exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest”. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar is part of the travelling delegation, suggesting media messaging on the outcomes is being managed from Islamabad.
The visit also comes as Pakistan and Qatar mark longstanding cooperation. The Foreign Office described the partnership as “rooted in their shared faith and values” and a “longstanding partnership characterised by mutual trust and close coordination at regional and international forums”. Prime Minister Shehbaz undertook two visits to Doha in September 2025, including one to express solidarity after Israeli attacks on Qatar.
What is still uncertain
The Qatari readout from Tuesday’s bilateral meeting, and any joint statement or signed agreements, were not available at the time of writing. It is also not yet confirmed whether the prime minister will travel onward from Doha to other destinations, or whether the delegation will include private-sector representatives alongside the official party.
