What happened
Pakistan publicly consolidated its position as the lead backchannel for US-Iran de-escalation talks on Friday, 27 March 2026, with a Kuwaiti royal endorsement and a supportive US-lawmaker readout arriving within hours. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had on Thursday confirmed on X that “US-Iran indirect talks are taking place through messages being relayed by Pakistan,” that a 15-point US framework had been shared with Tehran and was “being deliberated upon by Iran,” and that “the brotherly countries of Turkiye and Egypt” were supporting the effort, Dawn reported.
By Friday afternoon the Prime Minister’s Office said Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah, in a call with PM Shehbaz Sharif, had “fully endorsed” Pakistan’s mediation effort. PM Shehbaz used the call to condemn attacks on Kuwait.
Hours later in Washington, Congressman Tom Suozzi, the Democratic co-chair of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus, told a virtual briefing that Pakistan was “a very, very important neutral party, with friends on both sides” and that Pakistan “can play more and more of a role in international affairs as a mediator.” Ambassador Rizwan Sheikh told the same briefing that Islamabad stood ready to facilitate if both sides sought it.
The Munir channel and the 15 points
According to regional diplomats cited by Dawn, Field Marshal Asim Munir has been central to sustaining the channel, maintaining direct contact with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Iran sees Pakistan more as a facilitator than a mediator, Dawn reported, expecting a posture similar to China’s contribution to the 2023 Iran-Saudi rapprochement.
US envoy Steve Witkoff told President Trump’s cabinet meeting that “we have … presented a 15-point action list that forms the framework for a peace deal. This has been circulated through the Pakistani government, acting as the mediator,” China’s official Xinhua agency reported from Washington. A CNN report cited by Xinhua said the White House was arranging a Pakistan meeting over the weekend and that Vice President JD Vance might travel.
The gap is wide. Washington’s proposal demands zero enrichment, dismantlement of key nuclear facilities, transfer of enriched uranium stockpiles, limits on ballistic missile programmes and a guaranteed reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Dawn reported. Iran has rejected the enrichment and nuclear-dismantlement demands, and its missile programme is not negotiable during an ongoing conflict, the regional diplomat told Dawn.
What is still uncertain
It was unclear on Friday whether Vance would travel, whether Ankara’s parallel channel would yield a trilateral round, or whether Islamabad would host an inaugural session. US officials had reportedly been reluctant to visit over security concerns; the FO spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan was “very safe and secure.” No venue had been confirmed.
The military tempo has not eased. Dawn reported that Tehran neighbourhoods housing the Pakistan embassy and Pakistan House were “heavily bombed” overnight, though the buildings were not targeted; the embassy had relocated since the war began. Dawn also reported Israel’s unconfirmed claim of the assassination of Iran’s naval chief Alireza Tangsiri. Iranian decision-making has narrowed around harder-line elements after the killing of Ali Larijani.
