What happened
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced early on Monday that the United States and Iran had reached an agreement to end their war, and told the National Assembly that Pakistan would host the signing ceremony in Geneva on Friday.
Addressing the House after he broke the news on X past midnight, the prime minister said the formal signing would take place on June 19 in Geneva and would be hosted by Pakistan. He described the understanding as a historic milestone and said the United States and Iran had declared an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
US President Donald Trump confirmed the agreement shortly afterwards on his Truth Social platform, writing that “the Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete”.
The war began in late February, when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran. Pakistan mediated between the two sides, brokered a fragile ceasefire and hosted the first round of direct talks in Islamabad in April at a time when the two sides were not meeting face to face.
Terms of the memorandum
According to Iran’s Mehr News Agency, the 14-point memorandum provides that the United States will lift its naval blockade of Iran within 30 days and withdraw forces deployed near the country. The Strait of Hormuz, effectively shut since the war began, is to reopen for normal transit under the agreement. Iran’s frozen assets, estimated at about 24 billion dollars, are to be released in phases over 60 days of further negotiations, during which both sides are expected to address Iran’s nuclear programme. Discussions on Iran’s missile programme and its support for armed groups were removed from the immediate agenda.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed the agreement on state television but said Tehran would not begin implementing it until the formal signing in Geneva on Friday. He said the deal followed more than 14 hours of negotiations in Tehran involving a representative from Qatar, one of several regional mediators.
Tributes and caution
The prime minister credited Field Marshal Asim Munir, the Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, with keeping the talks alive during moments when they appeared close to collapse. He also praised Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and his team and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and paid tribute to the leadership of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and China.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif told the Assembly that the country was passing through historic times and lauded what he called the wisdom and patience of the prime minister, Field Marshal Munir and his team. PTI leader Sardar Latif Khosa thanked Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, who was present at the session, for Tehran’s stance during the war, but cautioned that a gap remained “between the lip and the cup” until the signing on Friday.
Why it matters
Pakistan acted as the principal intermediary in a conflict that disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for global oil and gas, and shook the world economy. The announcement was the most concrete step yet towards ending a war that had run for more than three months, although the agreement remained a memorandum of understanding and its implementation was still to be tested after the Geneva ceremony.
