What happened
The federal government raised the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs11.30 per litre and left the price of petrol unchanged for the fortnight beginning 1 February 2026, according to an official notification reported by Profit by Pakistan Today.
The new HSD price was set at Rs268.38 per litre, up from Rs257.08. The price of motor spirit, or petrol, was held at Rs253.17 per litre. The adjustments followed recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and remain in force until the next scheduled fortnightly review.
Why it matters
Diesel is a key fuel for heavy transport, agricultural machinery, railways and power generators, so the increase is expected to feed into inflation through higher freight and logistics costs. Profit reported that market participants expected upward pressure on food prices and essential commodities in the coming weeks.
Holding petrol steady offers some relief to urban commuters and middle-income households who use private vehicles and motorcycles. The split adjustment is likely to draw criticism from transporters and the agriculture sector, particularly during the winter months when operating costs are already elevated.
What remains uncertain
The notification did not say how long the government expected the diesel increase to persist beyond the current fortnight, and prices are subject to the next review under the fortnightly mechanism. The full pass-through to consumer prices will depend on how transporters and retailers adjust fares over the coming weeks.
