What happened
The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) said it had confirmed the presence of lithium in geothermal formation water at concentrations comparable to some of the world’s leading lithium-bearing brine projects, according to an announcement reported on 18 July 2026.
The state-owned company said the finding came from advanced geochemical analysis of produced formation water recovered during testing of a high-temperature geothermal well under its pilot geothermal programme. It described the result as the first confirmed occurrence of its kind in Pakistan. OGDC said the concentrations were comparable to higher-grade geothermal brines currently under commercial development in Europe and North America, GTV News reported.
Why it matters
Lithium is a strategically important mineral for electric-vehicle batteries, grid-scale energy storage and other clean-energy technologies, and global demand is projected to grow several-fold over the coming decade. Pakistan has been trying to develop its critical minerals sector, including through OGDC’s participation in the Reko Diq copper and gold project in Balochistan.
For OGDC, the discovery points to a possible diversification beyond oil and natural gas. The company, established in 1961, operates more than 50 producing fields and is one of the largest firms listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange. According to the report, it produces about 33,942 barrels of crude oil, 706 million cubic feet of natural gas and about 704 tonnes of LPG per day.
Lithium extraction from geothermal brines is often described as a comparatively sustainable route because it can combine renewable geothermal energy with direct lithium extraction, potentially lowering carbon emissions and environmental impacts compared with conventional hard-rock mining.
What is still uncertain
OGDC said the findings were encouraging but that further technical work was needed before commercial production could be considered. It has launched an expanded evaluation programme covering brine chemistry profiling, reservoir characterisation and resource confirmation studies, and said its technical teams were working with international consultants on development options, the report said. The regional extent, continuity and economic viability of the lithium-bearing resources have yet to be established.
