What happened
The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in Lahore has arrested a YouTuber it accuses of recruiting for a banned outfit and registered a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, according to a first information report reported by Dawn on 3 May 2026.
The FIR identified the suspect as Muhammad Saad bin Riaz, associated with a YouTube channel named Eon News. The case was registered on behalf of the state under Section 11F(2), which concerns membership of and support for a proscribed organisation, and Section 11W, which concerns the dissemination of material linked to banned groups.
According to the FIR, the arrest was made on 27 April during a search operation near GPO Chowk on Mall Road. Investigators said they had received information that a suspected al-Qaeda member was present at a mosque, Hanfia Ghusia Mughal Saraiy, opposite Lytton Road, and that he was caught recruiting individuals and distributing prohibited material. Officials claimed to have recovered five copies of a book about Osama bin Laden and an al-Qaeda membership card from his custody.

The arrest is part of a broader counter-terrorism push in Punjab. A CTD spokesperson said the department had carried out 214 intelligence-based operations across the province and questioned 215 suspects during the week, leading to the arrest of 21 people it described as members of banned organisations.
Among those detained, the spokesperson said, was a suspected member of Fitna-ul-Khawarij identified as Peer Shams, arrested in Lahore, and an alleged Balochistan Liberation Army operative, Abdul Lateef, apprehended in Toba Tek Singh. The operations spanned districts including Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Jhang, Khanewal, Mianwali, Toba Tek Singh, Multan, Gujrat, Pakpattan and Bahawalpur. The CTD said it had foiled planned terrorist activities in different districts.
What is still uncertain
The allegations against bin Riaz are accusations set out by investigators and have not been tested in court; no finding of guilt has been recorded. The FIR account, including the claim that he was recruiting at the mosque, is attributed to the Counter Terrorism Department and a source it cited. Dawn did not report a response from the suspect or from Eon News, and the status of the case against him was not immediately clear.
