What the chief minister ordered
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi on Sunday, 5 January 2026 ordered completion of a feasibility study for the establishment of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Power Distribution Company (KPPDC) within six months, a Dawn bureau report said. He also ordered the relevant quarters to finalise the draft Provincial Energy and Power Regulatory Authority (Pepra) Act, and directed the KP Transmission and Grid System Company to ensure timely and quality completion of ongoing transmission line projects.
According to a government statement, the chief minister stressed the need for timely execution and said the provincial government would provide the resources needed to complete the projects on time. Participants at the meeting also reviewed progress on power-transmission infrastructure and ongoing hydropower projects.
What the meeting also heard
The meeting was told that the 84 MW Gorkin-Matiltan hydropower project has achieved 87 per cent physical progress and is scheduled to be completed by December 2026. On a related regulatory track, KP had filed an application with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) for issuance of a licence for the transmission and grid company formed by the province, Dawn reported; in 2021, an adviser to the chief minister for energy and power told Dawn that Nepra had granted KP the licence for setting up a company to lay power transmission lines and put up grid stations to supply electricity produced by units located across the province.
The chief minister used the meeting to reinforce fiscal discipline on ongoing work. “Funds being utilised was public money and that negligence or lack of seriousness would not be tolerated,” Dawn quoted him as saying.
What remains open
The KPPDC feasibility study, the Pepra draft and the Gorkin-Matiltan commissioning timetable all remain works in progress. Provincial-level funding commitments, private-sector participation terms and any Nepra coordination needed to operationalise the new company had not been published on the date of this report.
