What happened
The federal government agreed to resume the supply of 35 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas to the CNG stations of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from 21 May, according to a senior government official cited by Dawn.
The decision was reached at a meeting between federal and provincial representatives in Islamabad. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had formed a ministerial committee a day earlier to discuss the suspension of gas supply to CNG stations in the province.
Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, adviser to the chief minister on finance Muzzammil Aslam and opposition leader in the KP Assembly Dr Ibadullah represented the provincial side, while the federal delegation included special assistant to the prime minister on political affairs Rana Sanaullah, federal minister for petroleum Ali Pervez Malik and officials of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited.
A provincial official who attended the meeting said CNG stations would receive gas from 6am to 6pm.
Why it matters
The official said the province’s domestic and commercial sector required 120mmcfd daily and had been receiving it without interruption, whereas CNG stations needed 40 to 45mmcfd that had been curtailed the previous month. Gas supply to more than 600 CNG stations in the province had been suspended since 14 April.
Muzzammil Aslam thanked the governor and the opposition leader for supporting the chief minister on what he called a sensitive issue for the people of KP. He said Article 158 of the Constitution states that gas supply within the country cannot be stopped, that gas helps produce cheaper electricity, and that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the country’s largest gas-producing province.
Governor Kundi said all political parties were united in making the resolution of the province’s problems the top priority. He said they had asked the prime minister to take notice of the matter and that an agreement was reached to provide 35mmcfd of gas.
What remains uncertain
KP CNG Association president Fazl Muqeem said the association had yet to receive orders regarding the reopening of CNG stations. The agreement was reported by a single Pakistani outlet citing officials who attended the meeting, and the detailed terms were not independently confirmed.
