What happened
At least 14 people, including five police officers, were killed in a coordinated suicide and armed assault on the Khuzdar residence of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and prominent tribal figure Mir Shafiqur Rehman Mengal, police and security officials said.
According to those officials, a suicide bomber first detonated explosives at the main entrance of Mengal’s residence, destroying the front gate and creating an opening for additional attackers. Moments later, several armed men entered the compound and opened indiscriminate fire.
Security personnel stationed at the residence engaged the attackers in an exchange of fire that continued for nearly three hours. Officials said all five assailants were killed in the security operation, and that Mengal survived the attack unharmed.
Authorities described the assault as “highly organised”. After the gun battle, security forces, police and other law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. The bodies of those killed and the injured were shifted to the Combined Military Hospital and the Khuzdar Teaching Hospital, the officials said.
A repeat target
Mengal had been targeted before. On 30 December 2011, a powerful suicide car bombing outside his residence on Arbab Karam Khan Road in Quetta killed 13 people and injured around 30 others. Mengal and his family survived that attack unharmed, and the banned Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Why it matters
The assault was the latest in a wave of militant violence in Balochistan during the first half of July 2026, in which police, soldiers and civilians were killed in separate attacks near Quetta, in Ziarat district and near Bela, and security forces mounted a large counter-operation in response.
Khuzdar is a district in the south of Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province by area but one of its least populated, which has for years seen a separatist insurgency and attacks by Islamist militant factions.
