What happened
Armed men attacked a police checkpost in the Kach Mangi Phase III area of Balochistan’s Ziarat district late on Monday 6 July 2026, killing at least nine police personnel, officials said. The officers had been deployed to guard construction work on the Mangi Dam, a project intended to ease chronic water shortages in the provincial capital, Quetta.
Ziarat Superintendent of Police Abdul Qudoos said the assailants stormed the post and that an exchange of fire continued for several hours before the attackers breached the premises. The dead included Muhammad Hussain, station house officer of Mangi police station, and Sohbat Khan, station house officer of Kowas police station, along with Head Constable Saifullah, who was in charge of the district’s Anti-Terrorism Force detachment.
Bodies were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Ziarat. Officials initially said five policemen were missing, and additional personnel were dispatched to the area as a search operation got under way. Protesters later blocked a national highway near the site.
The response
Balochistan government spokesman Shahid Rind said a joint clearance operation was launched after the attack and was later completed, with 15 terrorists belonging to Fitna al Khawarij killed. He said the operation involved the Frontier Corps, Balochistan Police, the Counter Terrorism Department, the Special Operations Wing and the Anti-Terrorism Force. Officials said explosive material, a detonator and ball bearings were recovered from the area.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack. The prime minister commended the security forces for the clearance operation and said the assault again showed that Fitna al Khawarij was an enemy of peace and development in Balochistan. Mr Naqvi described the assailants as Indian-sponsored militants and praised the police response.
