What happened
An armed mob attacked a village in Jacobabad district and set fire to more than 150 homes after a video of a love marriage between two people from the area spread on social media, police said, in an incident reported on 16 May 2026.
The Reporters, citing police, said the attack targeted the village of Muhammad Siddique Arain and involved around 400 armed individuals who went after the families of the couple. Police said the couple, Sadra Channa and Mohammad Hassan Burro, had eloped on 4 May and married in Hyderabad on 5 May. After their video circulated, attackers set fire to more than 100 homes belonging to the groom’s family, according to the same account.
Authorities registered two separate first information reports, one over the alleged abduction of the woman and another over the arson attack on the village. One suspect was arrested while others remained at large, the report said. The groom, Hassan Burro, was quoted as saying: “My village has been burned, and my life is in danger. We need protection immediately.” The bride, Sadra Channa, said she was an adult and had married of her own free will.
The government response
The Sindh government took notice of the incident. Government spokesperson Sadia Javed said the woman’s family had initially filed an abduction case, but that Sadra had clarified she married voluntarily. Javed said police intervened when the attackers moved to set homes on fire and arrested five people, though some suspects had obtained pre-arrest bail. She said the case was now before a court and that Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had directed the government to provide immediate relief and assistance to the affected families.
