Pakistan celebrated Eidul Fitr on Saturday, 21 March 2026, with congregational prayers at mosques, Eidgahs and open grounds, a day after the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee declared the Shawwal moon unsighted and Ramazan completed 30 days. The festival followed the two-day public holiday declared for 20 and 21 March and the earlier announcement that Eid would fall on 21 March.
In the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, congregations ran between about 7am and 9am. Islamabad police said more than 7,000 officers were deployed, with the largest gathering at Faisal Masjid monitored through Safe City cameras. Karachi police deployed 12,145 personnel, while Punjab Inspector General Abdul Kareem said more than 47,000 officers covered over 29,000 congregations across the province, Dawn reported.
Calls for Muslim unity
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif used their Eid messages to call for greater Muslim unity and solidarity. In a post on X, Shehbaz said: “Even as we celebrate Eid with gratitude and joy, our hearts remain heavy for the people of Gaza and Kashmir, as well as our brothers and sisters affected by the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East and the region.”
“Today, more than ever, we need greater unity within the Ummah so that we may collectively uphold justice, dignity, and lasting peace for all. At a moment of uncertainty and instability, our greatest strength lies in unity,” he said. The prime minister offered Eid prayers in Model Town, Lahore, accompanied by his sons Hamza and Suleman Shehbaz and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, according to APP.
Zardari, who offered prayers at Zardari House in Nawabshah, urged the nation to apply the lessons of Ramazan. “This day reminds us that true success lies in applying the teachings of Ramazan in our practical lives. Patience, tolerance, compassion, justice and brotherhood are the values that form the foundation of not only an ideal individual but also a strong and united nation,” he said. He prayed that “the unity of the Muslim Ummah remains intact and peace prevails throughout the world.”
On behalf of the armed forces, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu extended Eid greetings. An Inter-Services Public Relations statement said: “Eid reflects the enduring values of unity, compassion, and gratitude. For armed forces of Pakistan, the true spirit of Eid lies in the honour of serving and defending the motherland, even away from their families, to ensure peace and security for the nation.”
Regional backdrop
The messages came as a five-day Eid pause in cross-border fighting with Afghanistan held, a day after Pakistan rejected Taliban claims that it had violated the truce. The prime minister tied the occasion to the wider region, saying Muslims were marking Eid “in testing times” and describing what unites the Ummah as far greater than what divides it.
