What happened
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah approved a Rs 21.53 billion package, including a Rs 13 billion grant, to rehabilitate and improve road infrastructure managed by Town Municipal Corporations across Karachi, according to a ProPakistani report published on 24 January 2026.
The report, citing the Chief Minister’s Office, said 409 roads in seven districts had been identified for repair after 24 TMCs reported that severe financial constraints had prevented them from carrying out road works.
How the work is divided
Of the identified roads, 400 will receive patchwork repairs while nine will be fully reconstructed because of extensive damage, the report said. It put the total estimated cost of road rehabilitation at Rs 10.93 billion, with an additional Rs 1.64 billion allocated for related water and sewerage works, bringing the road component cost to Rs 12.57 billion.
District-wise data cited by the report showed Malir with the highest number of damaged roads at 98, followed by West with 81, Central 53, South 50, East 49, Korangi 39 and Keamari 39. Keamari had the highest estimated cost at Rs 2.32 billion, followed closely by West at Rs 2.31 billion and East at Rs 1.85 billion.
The report said all 24 TMCs will implement internal road rehabilitation schemes within their areas, with major allocations including TMC Manghopir at Rs 1.75 billion, Gadap at Rs 960 million, Baldia at Rs 944 million and Mauripur at Rs 858 million. Selected routes in Gulberg, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Sohrab Goth, Orangi, Manghopir, Saddar and Landhi will be rehabilitated end to end.
Why it matters
The package addresses a backlog that the report said municipal bodies could not clear on their own because of funding shortfalls, and it concentrates the largest spending on some of Karachi’s most densely populated districts.
What is still uncertain
The report did not give a start date, completion timeline or contracting process for the works, and it did not explain how the nine roads selected for full reconstruction were chosen.
