What happened
Militants attacked a security camp in Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the night of Thursday 14 May 2026, and Pakistan’s security forces said on Friday 15 May that they had repelled the assault and killed nine attackers.
Official sources told Pakistan Today that militants belonging to Fitna-al-Khawarij — the state-designated term for the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) — used explosives and tried to enter the camp through one of its gates while opening fire. The sources said four security personnel were martyred in the exchange and that the attackers failed to breach the camp. A search and clearance operation followed, and injured personnel were shifted to Peshawar for treatment, the sources said.
Other accounts of the toll differed. A senior security official in Peshawar told international news agencies that nine paramilitary officers and 10 militants had been killed, and that about 35 security personnel were wounded. Reuters, citing two security officials, reported at least eight troops killed and 35 injured, and said a vehicle filled with explosives was rammed into the camp before a gun battle. Police told Anadolu Agency that one civilian and at least eight security personnel were killed and 35 wounded. The TTP claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.
Why it matters
The attack was the latest in a run of assaults in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the border regions in May 2026. Pakistan Today reported that the incident came three days after a blast in Lakki Marwat killed nine people, including two traffic policemen, and that 15 police personnel were killed in a suicide attack on the Fateh Khel police post in Bannu district on 9 May. The attack came as Islamabad pressed Kabul over what it says is the presence of militant sanctuaries in Afghanistan, an allegation the Taliban government rejects. The TTP’s claim, and the targeting of a security camp in a district bordering Afghanistan, gave the assault added political weight.

The casualty figures were disputed. The official-source account carried by Pakistan Today said four soldiers were killed, while security officials quoted by Reuters and other agencies put the toll at eight or nine troops and about 35 wounded. Pakistan’s military had not issued a detailed statement on the attack when the accounts were reported. The number of attackers killed was given as nine by official sources and 10 by a senior security official, and the TTP’s claim could not be independently verified.
