Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz underwent major surgery at Sharif Medical City Hospital in Lahore on 28 May 2026 and was later shifted home, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said.
In a post on X, Ms Aurangzeb said: “Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif underwent major surgery at the Sharif Medical City Hospital, after which she has been transferred home.” She did not specify the nature of the procedure, describing it only as a “major surgery.”
Official response
Ms Aurangzeb said the chief minister had directly overseen provincial matters, including security and cleanliness arrangements, from the hospital on Eid day. Federal Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja expressed prayers for her swift recovery following the announcement.
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also extended his best wishes and prayers for her complete and speedy recovery, thanking God that the procedure was completed successfully and that the chief minister had safely returned home.
Previous hospitalisation
The chief minister was previously admitted to Sharif Medical City Hospital in November 2024 for medical checks, when officials said she underwent thyroid-related examinations. In January 2023, she underwent throat surgery in Geneva, Switzerland, according to reports.
Last month, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari rejected social media claims that the chief minister had cancer, calling the reports “completely false” and describing them as deliberate misinformation.
