What happened
The federal government on Thursday approved another increase in petrol and diesel prices for the next eight days.
The prime minister sanctioned an increase of Rs6.51 per litre for petrol and Rs19.39 per litre for diesel. After the revision, petrol will sell at Rs399.86 per litre and diesel at Rs399.58 per litre. The new prices take effect on Friday, 1 May 2026.
The move follows last week’s revision, when the government raised diesel by Rs26.77 per litre and petrol by the same amount.
Why it matters
Petrol and diesel are the main transport fuels in Pakistan, so their prices feed directly into the cost of moving people, goods and agricultural produce. The latest revision leaves both fuels just below Rs400 per litre and adds to the pressure households and businesses already face from high energy costs during the current fuel-supply squeeze.
On the same day, the government separately approved a one-month extension of a fuel subsidy for motorcyclists, an indication that officials expect the price pressure to persist.
What is still uncertain
The report did not set out the oil-price and levy components behind the increase, nor how long the eight-day pricing cycle will continue. It also did not say whether further changes are planned before the end of May.
