What happened
Pakistan’s security forces killed 27 militants belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in intelligence-based operations in the Miranshah area of North Waziristan district over the preceding 72 hours, the military’s media affairs wing said on 7 June 2026.
In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said forces had engaged multiple militant locations in the general area of Miranshah, following “intense and fierce exchanges of fire”. It said the slain militants belonged to “India-sponsored Fitna al Khawarij”, the term the state uses for the TTP, and that weapons and ammunition were recovered from them.
The ISPR said the militants had been involved in numerous attacks and the targeted killing of civilians, and that neutralising the group had avenged the killing of Malik Saifullah Dawar, a prominent tribal figure shot dead in Miranshah. It described the “heinous act” as avenged and said the perpetrators had been brought to justice. Sanitisation operations were continuing in the area under the counter-terrorism campaign known as Azm-i-Istehkam, approved by the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan, the statement added.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the security forces in separate statements. The prime minister said the designs of the banned group and its facilitators would be defeated “at all costs”, that the nation was proud of its security personnel, and that operations would continue until terrorism was completely eradicated. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also commended the forces, saying timely action had foiled the militants’ plans.
Why it matters
The operations were reported in a district that has been a focal point of Pakistan’s counter-militancy campaign along the border with Afghanistan. On 2 June, the district administration imposed Section 144 for an indefinite period in the Miranshah subdivision, restricting movement and traffic amid security concerns — a measure widely read as a sign of intensified operations.
