Reporting snapshot · 20 January 2026. This report reflects the agreement values and project details as published on 20 January 2026.
What happened
Pakistan and the Islamic Development Bank signed three loan agreements worth $603 million in Islamabad on 20 January 2026, according to The Nation. The agreements followed a meeting between Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema and IDB Vice President Dr Rami Ahmed. Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection Syed Imran Ahmed Shah and other senior officials attended the signing ceremony.
What the agreements cover
Under the first agreement, the Islamic Development Bank will provide $475 million for the M-6 Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway project. The second agreement launches a programme for the alleviation of extreme poverty among poor and flood-affected households, with a total cost of $134.2 million of which the IDB will provide $118.4 million; the report said it will run in 25 districts and benefit more than 160,000 households. The third provides $10 million for an out-of-school children project in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Why it matters
The M-6 financing supports a major road link in Sindh and is the largest single component of the package, while the poverty programme is designed to move extremely poor families off cash assistance towards sustainable employment and economic independence. Together the three agreements add external financing for infrastructure and social protection at a time when Pakistan is balancing development spending against fiscal constraints.
What is still uncertain
The report did not give disbursement schedules, interest or repayment terms for the three loans, nor a timeline for when each project would begin. It also did not say how the 25 districts for the poverty programme were selected or how the out-of-school children project in Azad Jammu and Kashmir will be delivered.
