What happened
Pakistan’s security forces killed 17 militants in separate counterterrorism operations in the southwestern province of Balochistan over the preceding 24 hours, state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported on Sunday, 16 August 2026, as Arab News also reported.
In the first operation, security forces killed 10 militants in the Shor Parod mountain area of Khuzdar district on Saturday, 15 August. Radio Pakistan, citing security sources, said the operation was carried out on credible intelligence about the presence of terrorists affiliated with “Fitna Al Hindustan,” a term the military and government use for militant networks based in Balochistan. The report said the security forces engaged three hideouts and that a clearance operation was under way to track those who escaped.
A second operation took place in Kharan district, where seven militants of “Fitna-ul-Khawarij” — a term the military uses for the Pakistani Taliban, also known as the TTP — were killed. Radio Pakistan said security forces completely destroyed the militants’ hideouts and recovered modern weapons, a large amount of ammunition, other war material, two vehicles and a motorcycle.
Citing security sources, the report said the slain militants were involved in planning looting, extortion, kidnapping for ransom, target killings and suicide attacks in the Kharan and Lajay areas.
Reaction
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the security forces for the Khuzdar operation, The Pakistan Times reported. In separate statements, they said the timely action and successful execution of the operation reflected the professional skills, expertise and operational capabilities of Pakistan’s security forces. They said the entire nation stood united with the security forces in the fight against terrorism and remained committed to eliminating the threat from the country.
Why it matters
The operations are the latest in a series of counterterrorism actions in Balochistan, where the authorities have reported a surge in militant activity in recent years. Pakistan has been grappling with increased militant attacks in Balochistan and the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province since the Afghan Taliban seized power in Kabul in 2021. The Khuzdar and Kharan operations reflect the pattern of intelligence-based raids on suspected hideouts that the military and provincial authorities have emphasised in their public statements, and they carry political weight because the prime minister and president publicly endorsed the Khuzdar action. In July, security forces killed 10 militants and detained two female suicide bombers in Surab and Mastung, and the ISPR said on 31 July that security forces had killed 2,084 terrorists in 2026.
