The Counter Terrorism Department said it had arrested an alleged suicide bomber linked to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan during an intelligence-based operation in Karachi, preventing what authorities described as a potentially major attack in the city.
A CTD spokesperson said the suspect, identified as Salman, was a close associate of a wanted militant known as Zafran. Investigators said Salman had previously been involved in militant activity and had taken part in an attack in Karachi’s Site Area in which foreign nationals working in the industrial zone were injured in a shooting.
During the operation, the spokesperson said, security officials recovered a suicide vest, photographs of sensitive locations and maps believed to be related to potential targets. The materials, authorities said, indicated that the suspect was involved in planning further attacks.

The CTD said the suspect was one of several militants dispatched to Karachi to carry out a large-scale suicide attack, and that some of his fellow bombers had not yet reached the city. Investigators believe the group’s plan included carrying out targeted killings before launching suicide attacks.
According to the spokesperson, Salman travelled to Karachi on the instructions of a militant commander named Maulvi Mukhlis Yar and entered the city with another associate, Idris, also known as Asadullah. The CTD said the suspect had received training in suicide bombing tactics in Afghanistan.
The spokesperson said Zafran had earlier been killed in an encounter with CTD personnel, and that a reward of Rs100 million had been announced over his involvement in multiple attacks. Investigators linked one associate of Salman to a 2025 suicide attack on Frontier Corps personnel in Quetta and another to a bombing at the police training centre in Dera Ismail Khan last year.
