What happened
A vehicle-borne suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a Pakistan Army convoy during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district on Saturday 21 February, killing a lieutenant colonel and a sepoy, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) wing said. Five militants were also killed.
According to the ISPR, the convoy was targeted by “Khwarij” — the state’s term for terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan — while an IBO was being conducted on the reported presence of militants including a suicide bomber. The leading group intercepted the vehicle-borne bomber before he could reach Bannu City, the ISPR said, “foiling his nefarious design to target innocent civilians/law enforcement personnel”. Five militants were then killed in an “intense fire exchange” before one of the explosive-laden vehicles was rammed into a convoy vehicle in desperation.
The two martyrs are 43-year-old Lt Colonel Shahzada Gul Faraz of Mansehra, described by the ISPR as a “brave commanding officer renowned for his daring actions, who was leading his troops from the front”, and 28-year-old Sepoy Karamat Shah of Peshawar.
Security sources, cited by state broadcaster PTV News, confirmed that “Ittihad Al-Mujahideen”, a sub-group of Fitna Al-Khawarij operating under the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, claimed responsibility for the attack. The sources said Gul Bahadur and key commanders are based in Afghanistan and have repeatedly used Afghan territory to stage attacks inside Pakistan, and pointed to the 4 March 2025 assault on Bannu Cantonment during Ramazan and the 2 September 2025 Federal Constabulary attack in Bannu as part of the same pattern. The ISPR statement warned that “Pakistan will not exercise any restrain[t] and operations would continue against the perpetrators of this heinous and cowardly act for justified retribution against khwarij, irrespective of their location”.
Government response
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in separate statements, condemned the attack and condoled with the families of the two martyrs. The President said operations against the Khawarij would continue “relentlessly and without discrimination”. The Prime Minister said terrorism by Fitna al Khawarij during Ramazan was “proof that terrorists have no religion” and praised the security forces for preventing a major disaster in Bannu. The ISPR tied the operation to “Azm-i-Istehkam”, the counter-terrorism campaign approved by the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan.
Why it matters
Bannu has been one of the most active theatres of TTP-linked insurgency in KP since 2022, and the loss of a lieutenant colonel leading from the front underscores the risk borne by field commanders in IBOs in the district. The attack came during the first days of Ramazan, a period Pakistan’s military and political leadership frame as a marker of the militants’ anti-Islamic intent, and the renewed claim by a Hafiz Gul Bahadur sub-group signals that the cross-border dimension of Azm-i-Istehkam remains unresolved.
What is still uncertain
The ISPR has not publicly named the slain militants or detailed whether further IBOs followed the Saturday operation. The full casualty count among security personnel beyond the two named martyrs has not been disclosed, and any further claims of responsibility may emerge in coming days.
