What happened
Pakistan’s security forces killed 48 militants across Balochistan over 48 to 72 hours, the military’s media wing said on 4 September 2026, describing them as members of groups it calls “Indian proxies – Fitna-al-Hindustan and Fitna-al-Khawarij”.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the operations were carried out in the districts of Mastung, Quetta, Kalat and Sibi. In Mastung, it said six “Indian-sponsored terrorists” were killed during an intelligence-based operation after their movement was detected. In Quetta’s Shaban area, forces identified four hideouts and killed 26 militants in an exchange of fire, according to the statement. Two more were killed when a hideout was raided in Kalat, and two were killed in Sibi’s Bhag area after the military said it foiled an attempt to raid a local police station.
Earlier on the same day, the ISPR released details of an operation conducted on 2 September in Kalat district in which it said 12 militants were killed, bringing the three-day total to 48. Radio Pakistan reported that 36 of the deaths occurred in the last 12 to 24 hours.
The Balochistan government separately said two policemen were among five people injured when law enforcement foiled what it described as a coordinated assault targeting a police station, a bank and the assistant commissioner’s office in the Bhag area.
President Asif Ali Zardari praised the security forces, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi commended the operations, which APP reported had killed 36 militants. The military said its campaign under “Azm-e-Istehkam” would continue at “full pace”.
Why it matters
The announcement follows a sharp rise in militant activity in Balochistan, which has become Pakistan’s most affected province in terms of attacks. According to a monthly assessment by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies cited in the reporting, Balochistan recorded 89 attacks in August, up seven per cent from 83 in July.
The three days covered by the operation were particularly deadly. On the night of 31 August to 1 September, militants launched a coordinated attack on the Customs House at Ziarat Cross in Pishin district on the N-50 highway; security forces killed 10 attackers, but six personnel, including two officers, were killed. On 31 August, the military said 11 militants were killed after they blocked the N-40 Quetta-Taftan highway in Chagai’s Nokcha area and set up an illegal checkpoint.
The operations are part of a sustained counter-insurgency effort in a province where attacks have drawn national attention and where the military regularly attributes violence to groups it links to India and to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.
What is still uncertain
The casualty figures, the identification of the groups and the description of the operations all rest on military statements; independent confirmation was not available at the time of writing. The ISPR did not release the names of the dead or detail how many personnel were wounded. The wider trend is also contested: the government and military present the operations as a successful campaign, while the persistence of attacks in August and the timing of the Pishin assault suggest the insurgency retains the capacity to strike security and civilian targets. Whether the tempo of operations reduces attacks over the coming weeks, or simply reflects an escalation on both sides, remains to be seen.
