Reporting snapshot · 12 October 2026 (Asia/Karachi). Pakistan sealed an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match Twenty20 international series against Sri Lanka with an 82-run win at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday. The third T20I on Tuesday is now a dead rubber. Sri Lanka's squad for the rest of the tour and the seven-match ODI tri-series with England that follows on 18 October were both confirmed before the series began.
What happened on Sunday
Pakistan took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series when they whipped Sri Lanka by 82 runs in the second match at the Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi, the Express Tribune reported. Riding on half-centuries from Maaz Sadaqat and captain Sahibzada Farhan, the hosts piled up 215-3 in their twenty overs — the highest T20I total at this venue, eclipsing the previous mark of 195-5 set against Zimbabwe on 23 November 2025. A young fast bowler, Imran Randhawa, then took 3-11 in four overs to restrict Sri Lanka to 133-7 in reply.
Sri Lanka, asked to bat second after winning the toss and electing to field, never recovered from 74-6 after 11.5 overs. Chamindu Wickramasinghe resisted briefly with a 24-ball 29, and Maheesh Theekshana finished unbeaten on 32 from 26 deliveries, but Pakistan’s attack stayed on top throughout. Salman Mirza removed in-form Lahiru Udara for five in the opening over; Randhawa then took the wickets of Sineth Jayawardena (22), Kusal Mendis (9) and Sahan Arachchige (0) in quick succession to break the back of the chase. Saim Ayub had Dasun Shanaka (9), and Shadab Khan removed Kamindu Mendis (23) to leave Sri Lanka gasping.
Pakistan’s batting — a record at the venue
Pakistan’s innings was built around a blistering opening partnership between Farhan and Fakhar Zaman, who put on 55 in 6.5 overs before Fakhar fell for 22 off 17. Farhan and Sadaqat then added 88 off 48 balls for the second wicket to push the total past 140, and Sadaqat and Hasan Nawaz added 72 for the third wicket to take it past 200. Farhan’s 44-ball 73 featured four fours and five sixes and brought up his second successive fifty of the series. He was dropped on 12 but capitalised fully on the reprieve.
Sadaqat, who brought up his second successive fifty off 30 balls, went after the bowling from there. He hit Theekshana for three sixes in one over worth 22 runs and finished on 96 from 51 balls, with seven sixes and six fours, before being caught in the deep off the final ball of the innings as he went for the big shot that would have brought up a hundred. Hasan Nawaz closed unbeaten on 19 from nine balls. Theekshana finished 1-55 in four overs, the most expensive of the five bowlers used by Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis; Eshan Malinga took 1-41 and Dasun Shanaka 1-30.
What the win means for the series
The 82-run margin is Pakistan’s heaviest-ever T20I win over Sri Lanka, the Daily Times noted. It also extends Pakistan’s long head-to-head dominance in the format: Pakistan have now won 18 of their 31 completed T20Is against Sri Lanka, with the visitors last winning a series against Pakistan in the format in 2019. The result confirms that the change of captaincy and the T20I squad reset — Sahibzada Farhan replacing Salman Ali Agha, with Babar Azam dropped from the T20 side — has begun with two wins, the second of them at a canter.
The third T20I is scheduled for Tuesday at the same Rawalpindi venue, Pakistan Today reported. It is now a dead rubber: the series belongs to Pakistan regardless of Tuesday’s outcome. The seven-match ODI tri-series with England begins on 18 October, with Rawalpindi hosting the first three league games and Lahore the remainder and the final. Pakistan will be captained in that competition by Shaheen Shah Afridi, who continues as the 50-over leader after the Pakistan Cricket Board’s 5 October squad announcement reported by KhabarWire here.
What is still uncertain
Three questions remain open. First, the series outcome may prompt the selectors to confirm whether the T20I captaincy change and the omission of Babar Azam from the T20 squad will extend beyond this assignment. The board has not said whether Farhan is the long-term leader or whether Agha and Babar will return. Second, the dead-rubber third T20I will indicate whether Pakistan are content to rotate or to press the experimental hand: Razaullah debuted in the first match, Randhawa was the strike bowler in the second, and Maaz Sadaqat has now passed fifty in both innings. Third, the venue’s record total is a useful headline, but Pakistan’s bowling depth — Randhawa 3-11, Mirza 2-28, with Shadab and Ayub picking up one each — will need to be tested against a fuller Sri Lanka reply than Sri Lanka managed on Sunday.
The series result is a positive start for Farhan’s stint as T20I captain and for the post-World Cup T20 reset. Whether the reset is permanent will only become clearer when the ODI tri-series and the next round of selection begin.
