What the PHF launched on 14 October

The Pakistan Hockey Federation soft-launched the Pakistan Hockey League at a ceremony in Islamabad on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, the Express Tribune reported. The federation describes the league as a joint initiative with MediaCast, a private partner, intended to bring international players, Pakistani talent, corporate sponsors and team owners together under a professional competition structure.

The Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), the state news agency, reported that the event was attended by senior government representatives, legendary Olympians, sports leaders and private-sector representatives, and said the league aims to attract corporate investment, bring internationally renowned players to Pakistan and give Pakistani players exposure to international standards.

Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme and the ceremony’s chief guest, said the government would continue supporting hockey’s revival and encouraging investment in the sport, APP and the Express Tribune reported. PHF president Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani said the federation was committed to sustained reforms, investment and institutional development, listing better playing standards, upgraded infrastructure, corporate investment, expanded facilities and improved incentives for players among its priorities.

Salman Danish, owner of MediaCast and a partner in the league, said his company would work with the PHF to organise the competition professionally, attract sponsors and build what he described as a sustainable commercial model, the Express Tribune reported.

APP said prominent former players attended, including Shahnaz Sheikh, Shahbaz Ahmed Senior, Hassan Sardar, Tahir Zaman, Mansoor Ahmed Senior and Khwaja Junaid.

The format the organisers describe

The PHF has said the inaugural season will be held in 2027, with six to eight franchise teams, and that the league is being developed on the model of the FIH Hockey Pro League and the Indian Hockey League. The federation says renowned international players will feature, giving Pakistani players the chance to compete and share a dressing room with them, and that it wants to draw the private sector into ticketing, hospitality and grassroots development.

APP and the Express Tribune both described the 14 October event as a launch or soft launch rather than the start of play. No match schedule, venue list or player draft has been announced.

Why Pakistan hockey needs a league

Pakistan is a former powerhouse in international hockey that has struggled to maintain its position among the sport’s leading nations, the Express Tribune noted. The federation frames the league as a way to rebuild the domestic game, raise competitive standards and reconnect younger generations with the country’s hockey history, the same report said.

The national team has had a mixed recent run. Pakistan qualified in March for a return to the FIH Hockey World Cup and departed in August for the tournament, after years outside the top tier. At the Asian Games in Japan the men’s team lost a semi-final to India before finishing with bronze.

A league promised since 2016

The Pakistan Hockey League is not a new idea. Geo Super reported that a revised model has been under consideration since 2016, but the proposal was repeatedly shelved over permissions, scheduling and, ultimately, financial constraints. In 2022 the plan gained traction again, with reports of an office set up in Lahore and a former Pakistan Super League project director hired as a consultant, but the competition did not take place.

The federation announced a 2027 staging in August 2026 and confirmed 14 October for the formal launch in September, Geo Super reported.

What is still uncertain

Who owns the teams. The PHF has said six to eight franchise teams are expected, but no owners, host cities or franchise names have been announced.

Money. MediaCast is described as the commercial partner, but the league’s funding, the size of any investment and the split of revenue between the PHF and the private partner have not been disclosed.

Player and broadcasting arrangements. There is no published player draft, salary structure, overseas-player list, broadcast deal or sponsor roster.

Dates. The PHF has said only that the first season will be in 2027 and that it will be played in Lahore; no window, venues or fixture list have been released.

Officials’ commitments. The statements by Rana Mashhood, Wani and Danish are commitments of intent. The APP report is based on a PHF press release, and the full text of any agreement between the PHF and MediaCast has not been published.
