What happened
Anthropic released two closely related artificial-intelligence models on 1 September: Claude Fable 5.1 for general professional use and Claude Mythos 5.1 for a smaller group of vetted cybersecurity and life-sciences organizations. The company says the products share the same underlying model. The principal difference is how much access users receive to capabilities that could help either defenders and researchers or malicious actors.
Fable 5.1 is available through Claude subscriptions, Anthropic’s developer platform and several cloud marketplaces. Mythos 5.1 remains limited to approved US organizations through trusted-access programs. According to Anthropic’s product documentation, both begin at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Those headline prices are unchanged from the previous Fable release, but the price for reusing cached information has fallen by 75%, to $0.25 per million tokens.
That less visible change may matter more to heavy users than a benchmark lead. Long-running agents repeatedly refer to earlier instructions, code and documents. Anthropic estimates that cheaper cache reads reduce the cost of typical workloads by about 25% and highly agentic ones by as much as 45%. Those figures are vendor estimates, not a guarantee for every application; actual savings will depend on how often a workload can reuse cached context.
Independent reports broadly confirm the product details. Axios described the launch as a combined push on capability, cost, privacy and safeguards. TechCrunch highlighted the same tension: the public model is cheaper and less prone to unnecessary restrictions, while the less restricted version stays gated.
One model, two access regimes
The paired release makes Anthropic’s risk policy part of the product design. In its Mythos documentation, the company says advanced cyber and biology capabilities can be useful for discovering vulnerabilities or conducting legitimate research but could also enable cyberattacks or dangerous biological work. Fable therefore applies safeguards that can block a request or route it to a less capable model. Mythos gives vetted users wider access while retaining safety monitoring and a default 30-day data-retention requirement.
Anthropic says the revised Fable safeguards are more precise than those introduced with Fable 5 in June. The company reports 85% fewer interventions on benign biology requests and says software developers can now ask the model to identify vulnerabilities in source code. It still blocks penetration testing, exploit generation and binary-based vulnerability scanning. For many flagged requests, biology questions are routed to Claude Opus 5 and cybersecurity questions to Opus 4.8.
This approach acknowledges a persistent problem with safety filters: a rule broad enough to catch dangerous requests can also obstruct legitimate ones. False positives impose real costs on developers, researchers and security teams, especially when an agent fails halfway through a long job. Axios reported that some customers had considered relying less on Claude because of such interventions. Reducing those interruptions could improve the product without making every capability generally available.
It also creates a less visible user experience. A person may believe they are evaluating Fable 5.1 when a safeguard has silently routed part of the work to another model. Anthropic says users are not charged Fable prices for rerouted requests, but comparisons become harder: quality, speed and behavior can change within a single workflow because of a safety decision the user does not control.
Cheaper agents change the competitive question
Model releases are usually presented as contests over benchmark scores. Fable 5.1 arrives with those claims too: Anthropic says it improves coding, document-heavy knowledge work and tasks that run for hours or days. Yet the economic change is easier to translate into a customer decision. If context reuse becomes substantially cheaper, organizations can afford longer sessions, larger working sets and more frequent agent runs without the same increase in token spending.
That can widen the gap between a demonstration and a deployed system. An agent that appears affordable for one short task may become expensive when it repeatedly reads a repository, checks documents or recovers from failures. Cache pricing directly affects that repeated work. It does not eliminate other costs, including engineering, human review, cloud tools and the consequences of mistakes.
The launch also suggests that frontier-model competition is moving beyond a single measure of intelligence. Customers are being asked to compare total workload cost, refusal rates, privacy terms, geographic processing options and the degree to which a model can work unattended. Anthropic is offering US-only inference at a 10% premium and says eligible enterprise customers can use special safeguards that keep data in their own cloud infrastructure. Each feature responds to a different institutional concern rather than to a leaderboard.
What remains uncertain
The largest open question is how the models behave outside Anthropic’s evaluations. Benchmark results can depend on prompts, tools, scoring and the amount of computation used at test time. Anthropic itself notes that some comparisons use newly released task sets and that safeguard interventions can produce zero scores or substitute responses from other models. Direct comparisons should therefore be treated as evidence from a specified setup, not a universal ranking.
Safety performance is similarly difficult to reduce to one number. TechCrunch reported that Anthropic’s system card rates Mythos 5.1 slightly worse than Opus 5 on an overall measure of misaligned behavior, while better than the earlier Mythos 5 and Sonnet 5. That mixed result does not establish that the release is unsafe, but it does show why broader capability and narrower intervention rates need continued external scrutiny.
The clearest verified change is the structure of the offer: one underlying frontier model, a broadly available version with targeted restrictions, a gated version for approved high-risk work, and lower costs for agents that reuse context. Whether this becomes a durable template will depend on evidence that the safeguards block genuinely dangerous assistance without routinely degrading legitimate work—and that the cost savings survive real production workloads.
